There are a lot of things we can fake our way through. The first days on a new job, dinner with strangers, orgasms, etc. There is no substitute for exercise. For a great jump start to your new year, check out Oprah’s web site.

Without daily activity, we become weak, crooked and captive to destructive thinking — rather than constructive thinking.  The moment we begin to stretch and breathe, something powerful happens inside our bodies and mind and we are transformed.

Be the change you seek by showing up for regular Pilates classes and augmenting your workouts with regular cardio. You’ll notice the change and so will those around you.  Here are some tips for newcomers:

• Start with a private session for a one-to-one orientation to the studio, Pilates principles and equipment.

• Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothes so your instructor can view the shape of your core and the extension of your limbs. She will offer corrections to help you reach the optimal form and avoid injury.

• Hydrate ahead of time and eat for energy in the hour or two before you arrive.
